Israeli official calls to save Dead Sea
Posted by: | CommentsWork on the Dead Sea Canal canal project must start immediately to stop water levels from receding further, Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Silvan Shalom said.
Speaking before the Knesset’s finance committee Monday, Shalom said it is vital to begin a pilot project examining environmental impact the proposed canal will have on the Dead Sea and addressing receding water levels, Maariv reported.
Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority have agreed to the construction of the canal, a 112-mile link between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea. About 52.8 billion gallons of water will be pumped annually to the Dead Sea and other desalination projects to be used by the three entities, the Tel Aviv newspaper said.
The project will be carried out in stages, with one of four pipelines laid to pump the water from the Red Sea, the newspaper said. The second stage will involve the desalination of 26.4 billion gallons of water which will be transferred to Jordan, and the third stage relates to the transfer of the remaining 26.4 billion gallons of water to the Dead Sea, the newspaper said.
Last month in Washington, Shalom received assurances from the World Bank it would finance a feasibility survey for the project to be completed between 2010 and 2011, Israeli media reports said.

Cairo Metro
Posted by: | CommentsCairo Metro is Africa’s only real metro system, and aside from the usual first-time discombobulations when using any new metro – like negotiating the ticket machines and figuring out which directions the trains are heading in – it is safe, clean, and efficient.
For now there are only two lines: one running from El-Marg to Helwan, and the other from Shobra to Giza. You’ll find that with only a few stations in the tourist heart of the city, it is of limited use in getting between all of the various must see’s, but there are exceptions.
Sadat station is beneath Midan Tahrir and close to the Egyptian Museum, Mar Girgis station is just opposite Coptic Cairo, El-Malek El-Sahel is well placed for exploring parts of Old Cairo, and Mubarak is nearby the Ramses train station.
By the way, construction is underway of a third line, which will link the airport to the city centre, but this has some years to go before completion.
Pricing is nice and easy, as it is just one Egyptian pound per journey (about 11 pence), regardless of the distance that you plan to travel, but remember to keep hold of your ticket in order to work the turnstiles at your destination. You’ll see the stations by the big red ‘M’ on the above ground signs.
For women travellers there is the option of travelling in the one (and sometimes two) dedicated women-only carriages, usually at the front of the train. You’ll also sometimes find women-only queues at the ticket booths at some of the larger stations.
