An Italian luxury cruise ship crashed into a pier at the Red Sea port of Sharm El Sheikh yesterday while attempting to dock in very rough weather.

Three crew members aboard the ship were killed in the accident and a fourth crew member and three passengers were slightly injured, according to Costa Crociere, the owner of the luxury liner Costa Europa.

The injured passengers included two British and one Italian citizen. They were taken to an Egyptian hospital for a check-up, and released soon after, according to a spokesperson for Costa Crociere.

Costa Crociere would not comment on the nationality of the dead sailors, but local media reports said two were Indian and one was Brazilian.

The cruise company could also not say exactly where on the ship the sailors were when it crashed. An investigation is underway, they said.

According to a statement released by Costa Crociere offices in Genoa, Italy, the 55,000 ton Costa Europa was on an 18-day cruise from Dubai to Savona, Italy with 1,437 guests on board when it rammed into the pier while docking at Sharm El Sheik at 4:45 a.m. local time.

The ship suffered damage on the right side, listed and started to leak.

All the passengers were quickly disembarked, and the ship safely moored in port, but the cruise is over. The company spokesperson said that Costa Crociere is arranging for all the passengers to be flown back to their countries of origin.

An Italian Navy ship, part of the Italian contingent of the Multinational Force and Observer, an independent international organization with peacepeeking responsibilites in the Sinai, is assisting with the repair of the ship and pumping out the water, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

A hail storm in Cairo has killed four people and injured more than 50 others.

The extreme weather conditions caused chaos in Egypt’s capital city, resulting in traffic accidents and widespread panic, AFP reported.

In the country’s second largest city, Alexandria, located on the Mediterranean Sea coast waves as high as a two-story building hit the shore, the daily Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.

Also a European luxury cruise ship crashed into a pier in the resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh early Friday morning killing three sailors and wounding four tourists, maritime officials said.

In a statement, the General Authority for Red Sea Ports confirmed that the sailors died as a result of the ships collision.

Another person was killed amidst a wave of car collisions nationwide.

The storm has subsided but meteorologists predict severe weather in the next three days.

It’s late at night and the discotheques, music bars and shisha lounges that have sprouted around Amman are buzzing with clients, belying the city’s old image as the sleepy capital of a conservative kingdom.

Jordan’s increasingly young population is helping shape this new scene, a tamer version of the Middle East’s so-called ‘sin city’, Beirut, renowned throughout the Arab world for its lively nightlife.

“You know, 15 years ago you could barely find a taxi after eight in the evening — the streets were mostly empty,” said Sarah, an American and long-time resident of Amman. “But nightlife has changed drastically since I first came in the early 1990s when there were basically two places to go other than the big hotels,” said the public relations executive as she listened to live jazz at Canvas, an upscale restaurant in a historical district of the capital.

Actor Nabil Sawalha, who owned a nightclub called the Cart Wheel in the 1980s, has also noted the difference. “Many years ago, there were very limited places to go out in the city,” Sawalha told AFP. “A few people could afford to go out for partying or dancing once or twice a month. We used to do so and return home by midnight. But now things have changed and partying has become a lifestyle for young people,” he said.

A decade ago, the upmarket west Amman neighbourhood of Abdun was lined exclusively with embassies and the stately villas of the city’s old wealth and newly rich. But the streets now share space with restaurants and cafes sprouting up to cater to a young clientele eager for a taste of Western-style leisure.

Even places in the heart of Amman’s old district, like Rainbow Street, have undergone a facelift, where venues with names like Wild Jordan, Books@cafe and La Calle now draw an intellectual and Bohemian crowd. Driving luxury cars and sporting the latest fashions, many of these young, affluent Jordanians gather almost every night at the chic new spots.

“The new generation has brought new phenomena from the West, created a new atmosphere and started to steadily break free from old traditions and Amman’s old image as a quiet city,” sociologist Seri Nasser of the University of Jordan told AFP
