Aswan
Located on the River Nile in Upper Egypt, the city of Aswan is a stopping point for River Nile cruises which have travelled here from Luxor some 80 miles to the north. Although many people just pass through Aswan as part of the their Nile cruise, Aswan is definitely a place worth spending a little longer.
It is in Aswan where the River Nile is at its most captivating. Sail boats and feluccas are dotted along the river taking people to and from the palm fringed islands in the middle of the river. Aswan is Egypt’s most southern city so it is an ideal place to visit during the winter if you are looking to relax in magical surroundings. The Sofitel Cataract in Aswan was built in 1899 and is legendary. Its guest include Winston Churchill, Agha Khan, King Farouk, Lady Diana and the novelist Agatha Christie who is said to have written part of her book “Death on the Nile” at the hotel.

The construction of the Aswan High Dam created Lake Nasser which itself is becoming more popular as a cruise destination as well as being a favourite destination for anglers in search of the impressive Nile Perch.
Like other major destinations along the River Nile, Aswan has a wealth of ancient history. Regular trips operate from here to perhaps the most impressive temple in Egypt at Abu Simbel which was originally built by Rameses II and relocated to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. Other important sights include the Temple of Philae, the Unfinish Obelisk and the Aswan Botanical Gardens.
