For example, whereas in the past AI was black and white if it’s health was low or high it would react in a certain way; recent developments have seen the introduction of’survival instincts’ that help to make AI feel more realistic, assessing an environment like a player would to determine whether to take cover or fight. Other examples include intelligent movement patterns that are influenced by the player’s position in-game (such as moving to avoid enemies), behavior trees which allow for more complex and hierarchical reactions, or the ability to search for items that have been dropped.
Procedural content generation is another popular application of AI in games; allowing for infinitely larger and more varied worlds to be generated for players to explore. This is commonly used in open world and roguelike titles such as No Man’s Sky which uses an AI system to generate over 18 quintillion planets, each with its own ecosystem, terrain and wildlife.
