Attic Insulation Safety Precautions
Bryars Spray Foam is one of the most cost-effective home energy improvements you can make. Combined with attic air sealing, it can significantly reduce heating and cooling costs and help prevent dangerous ice dams in the winter. But as with any project that involves working in the attic, there are certain Insulation Safety Precautions to consider before beginning this do-it-yourself project.
Fiberglass insulation releases tiny particles that can irritate the eyes, nose and respiratory system when inhaled or touched. In addition, wet insulation can promote mold growth and lead to additional health issues. And some older attics contain vermiculite insulation, which may contain asbestos, a carcinogen.
Safety Precautions for Attic Insulation Projects
When choosing an attic insulation type, be sure to consider its fire resistance, as this property is especially important in homes with wood-frame construction. It’s also a good idea to choose an insulation material that’s resistant to pest infestation. Pests can contaminate insulation with feces or dead bodies, which can pose serious health risks.
If you’re planning to install cellulose insulation, be sure it’s tested for asbestos before installation. And if your attic has a vermiculite or mineral-based insulation, be sure to hire an approved asbestos abatement contractor to handle any removal and disposal of the materials.
Before starting the attic insulation project, make sure to gather all tools and supplies before you begin so you’ll minimize trips in and out of the attic. It’s also a good idea work early, as attics tend to heat up throughout the day. Wear a mask or OSHA-approved particulate respirator, and make sure to drink plenty of water while working in the attic. Finally, always wear knee pads to protect your legs when crawling on attic joists. Also, always walk on joists or truss chords rather than exposed ceiling drywall or insulation to avoid falling through the roof.
